Konstantinos E. Farsalinos, M.D., is a research fellow at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens-Greece, at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Patras-Greece and at the National School of Public Health-Greece. He has been conducting laboratory and clinical research on e-cigarettes as a principal investigator since 2011. Examples of his work include the first study on the cytotoxic effects of e-cigarette vapor on cultured cells and the immediate effects of e-cigarette use on cardiac function and coronary circulation.

VTA Responds to Trump Administration; Calls Proposal Misguided 

Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, released the following statement:

“We are deeply disappointed in the President’s decision to take direction from anti-vaping activists like Mike Bloomberg by attempting to ban the sale of nearly every vaping product on the market. A ban will remove life-changing options from the market that have been used by several million American adults to quit smoking.


“In the history of the United States, prohibition has never worked. It didn’t work with alcohol. It hasn’t worked with marijuana. It won’t work with e-cigarettes. The President should meet with just one of the millions of American voters who have used flavors to quit smoking before moving forward on this draconian approach to regulation and public policy.


“Destroying thousands of small businesses and sending ex-smokers back to smoking will do nothing to stop drug dealers from selling contaminated THC cartridges. A flavor ban will only lead to the creation of yet another multibillion-dollar black market that will operate with zero safety controls.”

As a manufacturer with over 400 flavors, this affects our company, employees and hundreds of thousands of customers who have bought our quality e-liquid over the years.
This news release notes that "compliance policy would prioritize enforcement of the Premarket Authorization ("PMTA") requirements".

This means that products that are not in compliance by the effective deadlines will be removed from market. That deadline is currently 5/20/2020. The FDA press release is concerning. No one knows yet the extent of flavors that will be affected. FDA has stated they will issue a new press release in a few weeks clarifying their intents.

ECBLEND IN THE PROCESS
ECBlend has been in the process for obtaining Premarket Authorization ("PMTA") from the FDA for the past few years. We have registered our products and ingredients prior to the FDA deadlines set for those actions.

In 2019 ECBlend has continued the process and, along with other manufacturers, engaged a scientific consulting firm that is respected worldwide for its risk assessment experience, technical capabilities, and industry leadership who specialize in helping clients characterize the health and environmental risk associated with complex exposures involving chemicals, pharmaceuticals or radionuclides in a variety of media and environments.


In July 2019 FDA released the Final Guidance for PMTA.  There is a lot yet for us to do and we will do everything we can to keep as many of our most popular products as we can.

Banning flavors would be a public health travesty. More than two million Americans have died from cigarette smoking related illnesses over the last five years. If a federal flavor ban is enacted, more than 10 million adults will be forced to choose between smoking again (something the FDA has said will happen if vapor products are pulled from the market) or finding what they want and need on the black market.
